Inspiration:

The summer I turned 19 I had the privilege of studying Impressionist Art for three weeks in the South of France. It was glorious, but that is not what this story is about. To get to Nice I was to fly into Paris and hop on the next train headed south. Easy peasy. But my flight was hours delayed and by the time I got to the train station the only train headed to Nice was an overnight train. Which required a reservation. Which I did not have. So I sat down and cried a little. Then I got up, bought a croissant and a train ticket for the next morning and inquired at the few hotels around the station about a room for the night. Did I mention that I don’t speak French? I struck out at the hotels and wandered back to the station to sleep on the floor. (According to my well-traveled father, the floor of a Parisian train station is a perfectly acceptable place for a college student to sleep. Spoiler alert. It’s really not.) Between getting yelled at in French by the station guards and being propositioned by an elderly gentleman (Thank you Lady Marmalade for the one French sentence I DO know) it was not a great night of sleep.

But you know what? Getting on that train the next morning felt amazing. Settling into my seat, eating the second of many croissants to come, replaying the events of the previous 12 hours. I could feel my shoulders relax, my breath grow fuller. I drifted off to sleep and woke up exactly where I was supposed to be. All this to say that as in life, a painting quite often goes through some very unexpected moments that feel very unsettling and inconvenient at the time; but ultimately end up being the reason a painting feels interesting and beautifully rich.
