Guilt

Dear Artist Friends...

Even in the best of times I can let myself feel guilty about being an artist. With no shortage of crisis in our world I often think to myself things like

“I should’ve been a scientist so I could be working on a vaccine right now.” or

“The only real work that matters right now is building an equitable future for all people. I should be working for a non-profit.”

But the truth is I’m an artist. I would make a miserable scientist. And as an Enneagram 9 (the Peacemaker) I’d be rendered immoble by the constant confrontation of working on the front lines of change.

Instead I acknowledge that people need beauty, peace, and inspiration in their lives so that THEY can continue doing the work they were meant to do. Whatever that might be.

And if they find those things in my art (which I am so grateful that many of you do) that my time is very well spent.

We’re all part of a bigger picture friends. And I’m happy to play my part. If you’ve ever felt this way or had these conversations in your mind, just know you aren't the only one.
