Why You Should Have an Email List

Hey art friend,

This week, we're going to talk about one of the most powerful tools you can use to grow your art business: an email list.

You might be thinking, “Do I really need an email list? Who is going to join? How will I even get people to sign up?” But the answer is a definite yes. You definitely need an email list. Your email list can be a game-changer for your art business. So, let's dive in and learn why you should have an email list and how it can benefit your art career; hopefully you’ll come away with the motivation to get your email list started today.

1) Direct Access to Your Audience

First up, having an email list gives you direct access to your audience. Unlike social media platforms, where algorithms control who sees your posts, emails go straight to your subscribers’ inboxes. This means your message is more likely to be seen by people genuinely interested in your work.

Think about it. Social media can be fickle. One day your posts are getting tons of engagement, and the next, they’re barely seen. With an email list, you’re not at the mercy of changing algorithms. You have a direct line of communication with your collectors and potential buyers.

2) Building Relationships and Trust

The second reason to have an email list is that it helps you build relationships and trust with your audience. When someone subscribes to your email list, they’re giving you permission to enter their personal space – their inbox. This is a big deal and a great opportunity to connect on a deeper level.

You can use your emails to share more than just your latest work for sale. Share stories about your creative process, behind-the-scenes looks at your studio, or insights into your inspiration. The more your audience gets to know you and your art, the more they’ll trust you and feel connected to your work.

3) Increased Sales and Opportunities

Next, let’s talk about sales and opportunities. An email list can significantly increase your sales. When you have a new collection, a special promotion, or an upcoming event, your email subscribers are the first to know. These are your most engaged fans, so they’re more likely to support your work by making a purchase.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen artists sell out a new collection within hours just by sending an email to their list. It’s powerful stuff! And though I am not an artist whose works sell out in a day, I will say that about 75% of all my online sales come from my email list subscribers

4) Control Over Your Marketing

Another great reason to have an email list is control over your marketing. With social media, you’re at the mercy of the platform’s rules and algorithms. But with email, you have full control over how and when you communicate with your audience.

You can segment your list to send specific messages to different groups, schedule emails for optimal times, and track analytics to see what’s working and what’s not. This level of control allows you to fine-tune your marketing strategy and get better results.

5) Long-Term Asset

And finally, your email list is a long-term asset. Social media platforms come and go, but your email list is yours to keep. It’s a valuable resource that you can continue to grow and nurture over time.

Think of the time you spend growing and nurturing your email list as an investment in your future. The more you build and engage with your list, the more you’re setting yourself up for long-term success. It’s a reliable way to stay connected with your audience and keep them coming back for more.

Alright my friend, those are the five reasons why you should have an email list. I hope you are feeling inspired to start or grow your own email list today. I’d love to hear from you – do you have an email list? What has your experience been like? All the best,

Jennifer
