Last spring my family and I went to Florida to visit my husband's 101 year old grandmother. Because it was likely our only family vacation of the year I decided to splurge and get us a condo right on the beach - envisioning myself relaxing on the warm sand with the sound of the ocean washing my cares away. A real moment of zen. But the reality was it was windy. Like 40mph, 24 hours a day windy. We still managed to have a fantastic time with our family, but I only set foot on the beach once and I had to cry mercy 15 minutes later as my skin was literally sandblasted raw.
The beach is my happy place, and when I was done pouting about the wind I realized that the things I love about the beach don’t have to be saved for once-a-year tropical vacations. I live on an urban island, less than a mile from a beach. And though its rarely hot here, it’s often pleasant enough for a short trip to the beach to take in the open view and put my feet in the sand. Why wasn’t I taking advantage of it? Why was I saving happiness for vacations only? When I returned home I made a little rule for myself - any week that had a day over 70 degrees was a week that I would go to the beach at least once. And you know what? Those little trips to the beach, an hour here and there, make me so happy. Watching the birds and the kites and the kids building sand castles. It’s like a mini vacation any time I want.
