It's been almost 25 years, but I can still hear the sound. I am sitting on the beach in Nice, watching the chic French families enjoy their holiday and wondering how to walk gracefully over the gray pebbled beach from my striped beach towel to the blue Mediterranean sea. I lay back, close my eyes to the sun, and focus on the sound. The waves crash gently on the shore, and as the water recedes it's like a thousand tiny rain sticks have been tipped on end and spilled their clattering seeds into my ears. They must be able to right themselves because they do it over and over again with every advance of the sea. Its the most soothing sound I’ve ever heard. I lose myself for hours. Water crashing. Pebbles tumbling. Sun warming. Wind cooling. I add this moment to my collection, filed under “Things I Will Remember Forever.”
