I am pretty much an only child. And I also love to nap. Which means I have tons of memories as a kid of stretching out over the entire back seat of our car on long road trips with my parents. I’d alternate between reading a favorite book for the tenth time and dozing off. When I’d wake up I’d look out the window at the terrain flying by. It meant little to me. Woods, deserts, cities all blurred together. They were the backdrop to our family story. Where we were going. What we would do when we got there. I never minded those long drives, usually down to Southern California. The back seat was my own little world in which I was excused from the conversation to daydream and read and listen to music on my walkman. Maybe its because I grew up the only child in my house, but I am a person who loves peace and quiet. I search for it in my paintings as well. I feel it here in this piece. That dreamy gaze out the window from the back seat.
