Size: 30x40 // unframed
When I was a kid I discovered that even more than having my mom bake me a birthday cake, I loved to make my own. Every year she would take me to the grocery store to pick out some sort of fancy cake mix and whatever decorations I wanted to put on top. This painting reminds me of a specific cake I baked when I was 10. It had bright turquoise, pink, and purple frosting swirled together abstractly all over the top. My mom thought it looked hideous. I thought it was beautiful. You can see those colors peeking through in “Birthday Cake”. The sophisticated neutral palette of the adult me covering up the wild color preferences of my younger years. Still a part of me. Still influencing my decisions. We never really leave those bits of us behind.
