This painting is on its third life already. Like myself, it has had many ideas of who or what it should be. The first version of this painting never made it out of my studio. It was immature and foolish. It looked like everyone else, and nothing like itself. The second painting hung on my wall for a couple of years. I thought it was decent. But when you live with your own painting for a while, one of two things will happen. 1) You will love the painting more and more as time goes by and feel a deep satisfaction when you look at it. 2) Every day you will find something new in the painting that you wished you had done differently. Some shape or mark that picks at you until you can’t stand looking at the piece any more. And since one of the things I’ve learned in my art practice is that you must let go of good to make room for great, I covered that baby up and created the painting you see here. I’ve been living with it for a while and am completely satisfied. Every time I look at it I am reminded that if you’re still breathing it is never to late to start over. And that the history of “failed” paintings that are layered underneath this one are part of what makes this final version great.
