One of my favorite events when my boys were younger was the annual Mother/Cub Scout camping trip at Camp Royaneh in Cazadero, CA. This is definitely a glamping experience with all your meals prepared for you and a parade of fun activities to participate in with your kids in a truly beautiful setting. And as it turns out, I’m a pretty good shot with a BB gun. So you can imagine how disappointed my son and I were when we checked the weather forecast for our camping weekend and it showed 100% chance of rain. As Californians we’re not very good at rain, and my first instinct was to cancel the trip. But after some discussion about flexibility, lowered expectations, and the importance of keeping your feet dry we decided to brave the rain with a small crew of adventurous friends and just see how it went. As it turns out, that rain-soaked weekend was the best time we’ve ever had at camp. We felt a sense of adventure that banded us together with our friends. We appreciated the food and hot chocolate and dry tent like never before. And we experienced those rich green quiet moments that have their own earthy smell and only happen in the rain.
Like that weekend, this painting took a disappointing turn before coming out the other side better than expected. It has a cheerful disposition and the softness that only comes when you add a good amount of water.
