Black and Tan - 16"x20"
Size: 16x20 // unframed
I can’t help it. This painting reminds me of ice cream. The creamy richness, the soft peaks, the texture. The caramel swirl. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it. I feel like ice cream played a big part in my childhood. My father owned a wallpaper store in a suburban shopping center that was right next to a Swenson’s creamery. I went to the store with him every day after school, and he rarely said no if I asked him for money for a cone. Then if we were really celebrating we went to Leatherby’s. Ice cream sundaes as big as your head. I always ordered the Black and Tan. Caramel and fudge and toasted almond ice cream. You can imagine my disappointment when I learned as a young adult that if you ordered a Black and Tan at a bar they served you a beer. Fast forward a couple of decades and ice cream is still how we celebrate with our kids. Birthdays, scary doctor’s appointments, sports seasons ending. All deserving of a trip to our downtown creamery. I feel lucky to have it. I feel lucky to have these memories.
