I like to think I’m pretty good at naming my pets. My husband and I like people names. We’ve had Hugo, Beatrice, and Lottie the Boston Terriers. Our cat Chaka (like Chaka Khan) came with that name, but I fully approve. But it is possible that I’ve developed my pet-naming skills as I’ve gotten older, and maybe I was a little too literal when naming pets as a kid. My first pet was a cat that my parents somehow concealed in a box under the Christmas tree. I was pretty excited. I named her Christmas. When Christmas had kittens (this was back before responsible pet population control) on Easter Sunday I kept one. I named her Easter. Fortunately Easter never had any kittens on holidays or other days, so this string of names was done. Easter was the best cat you could ever imagine. She let me dress her in doll clothes and tuck her in on her back in my doll buggy. She looked Siamese or Himalayan or something like that. She was the exact color of this painting. And so this painting reminds me of all the furry creatures I have loved in my life. And how lucky I was to have them.
